Two Bids

 

PITBULLS:

 

            Continuing our analysis of the convention cards of 13 World Class partnerships , we look at their weak twos. Overall these pairs play constructive systems but that changes with their weak 2’s . They are definitely out to disrupt the enemy with their 2 bids. A number of pairs vary the meaning of the 2 bids depending on 1st , 2nd seat as opposed to 3rd & 4th seat. Others have multiple meanings to the opening 2 bid or they are transfers. Quite a number of pairs consider a weak 5-5 a pre-empt.

 

Lets look at each pair in turn :

 

Garozzo

 

2♦ weak 2 in hearts or strong 2 in hearts

2♥ weak 2 is spades or strong 2 in spades

2♠ weak 5-4 in the minors or strong with that hand

 

Meckwell

 

2♦ (1,2)  weak two in the majors   (3,4) x diamond 11,15 HCP

2♥ (1,2) x diamond 11,15 HCP   (3,4)  weak 2 in hearts

2♠ (1,2) weak pre-empt in diamonds (3,4) weak 2 in spades

 

Hamman & Soloway  , Woolsey & Robinson , Chagas & Assumpcao , Branco & Thoma

 

Normal weak 2’s some with Flannery 2♦

 

Lauria & Versace

 

2♦  18-20 balanced

2♥  weak 2 in spades or hearts

2♠  bad weak 2 in spades or hearts or 6-4 in the minors

 

Chmurski & Puczynski

 

2♦ (1,2) weak 2 in the majors   (3,4) weak 2 in diamonds

2♥ (1,2) weak 5-5 hearts & other suit ( 3,4)  weak 2 in hearts

2♠ (1,2) weak 5-5 spades & minor   ( 3,4) weak 2 in spades

 

Helgemo & Helness

 

2♦ weak 5-5 in hearts + clubs or 5-5 spades + diamonds

2♥ weak 2 in the majors

2♠ weak 5-5 in reds or blacks

 

Auken & Arnim

 

2♦ weak 2 in hearts or 5-5 in spades & a minor

2♥ weak 2 in spades or 5-5 in hearts and a minor

2♠ weak 5-5 in the majors or minors

 

Bocchi & Duboin

 

2♦ 18-19 HCP  

2♥ & 2♠   weak 2/s

 

Fantoni & Nunes

 

2♥ 2♦ 2♠  weak & natural 10-13 HCP

 

With weak 2’s you pay a price for artificiality especially if the opponents overcall or jump in NT. The majority seem to keep them natural at least in 3rd & 4th suit. The 2♦ bid is rarely natural . If you want to pre-empt with two suits then 2♦ must be some sort of “multi” .

 

The 2♦ as a weak two in the majors in 1st and 2nd seat only has some merit. Then you can define some two suited meanings with 2♠ & 2♥ also only in 1st and 2nd seat. The Polish pair play this . Meckwell play a variation of this .
