Red Deer Tournament

PITBULLS:

Some interesting hands in Red Deer that were disasters for myself and partner in Red Deer. This hand brings up splinter theory and it was very expensive.

Partner opened 1 and I responded 2♣ . This brought a splinter to 3 by partner. I wanted to slow partner down and tell him that there was terrible wastage in diamonds so I bid 3NT . In restrospect there is another bid that shows terrible wastage  in diamonds and that is 5♣ . Which bid do you use ? Length in partners first suit should be your guide. If you are short in that suit bid 3NT . If you are short in the unbid suit bid 5♣ . Partner passed 3NT with J98x AKJxx void Axxx and I went down in 3NT cold for 6♣ . If partner pulls 3NT to 4♣ , I would Q bid 4 as I did my duty to show the duplication of value in diamonds . 24 IMP swing  Ouch !

Equal non vul and RHO opens a heart . I overcall 2 and LHO bids 2 .  Partner who Is a passed hand bids 3♣ and RHO bids 4 . Now the poker game begins . You know  5♣/ goes for 300 but they do not . They might even think it is your hand. You should bid 5♣ and see what develops. You might buy it undoubled for –100 or push them to a psuedo sac. I passed 4 which made and lost IMPS as others were in 5.

Lost 16 IMPS on this hand where partner did not shine on the play of the hand. We got to a “momentum” 6 slam after LHO ( Dan Kramer ) overcalled 2 and then  backed in 4NT vul ostensibly to show clubs along with long diamonds . Probably a 7-5 or 7-4 in the minors can be expected with his auction.

A diamond lead and you ruff and finesse the spade which wins and LHO sluffs a diamond. Now what ? The bidding is your clue. The 4NT bid gives the club position away. You lead the club Q and it gets covered and up Ace . You hook  the spade again and draw the last trump. Cash the diamond Ace  and sluff a heart and lead the 9 of clubs. If they take  it , they must put you on the board with a sluff and a ruff or lead a club or  heart. If they duck the club , overtake and drive out the club. Anyway 5 spades , 3♣ , 2 and 2 hearts add up to 980 .

The opponents open 1 in 4th seat and your vul partner overcalls 1 . They pass and the diamond bidder ( Nick G ) re-opens with a double which gets converted for penalty. Your call ? Partner did not open a weak 2 vul but came in vul ( Bob C ) so partner is not suicidal . You know the spades are 5-1 so passing looks like –500 . This is a hand  for the S.O.S. redouble . You have 2 excellent unbid suits and the opponents might be hard pressed to double. Partners hand is KJ10xx KQ10x xx xx . They will not double 2 and more importantly they will realize they do not have a heart stopper and it might keep them out of their cold 3NT. Partner fell from grace and we lost 7 IMPS in 1X for –500.
