Hand Evaluation – KCB ( Voids
)
PITBULLS:
Nick & Klimo had a good auction to get to 7♥ that involved the
responder holding an unannounced void . How is this handled ? Here are
Kantars views from his site . Essentially a jump shows a void in that suit and (1 or 3
) . A 5NT response shows a void somewhere
and ( 0 or 2 ) controls . 6♣ asks for the
void suit. This is assuming a major suit agreement on trump. No such thing as showing
voids with minors agreed. With spades trump , asking for the void is simple after 5NT. 6♣
asks and you just bid your void and a return to the trump suit shows a club void. With hearts agreed ,
you are more restricted , so 6♦ says you have a
lower ranking void and the trump suit a higher ranking void.
A tormentee held this hand ♠xx ♥AKQxx ♦Ax ♣QJ10x , I opened 1♦ and she replied 1♥. I jumped to 4♠ which with my “Ghoulie style” bidding is natural. She read me for 6-6 or
7-5 or 7-6 in my two suits. Therefore , being off two fast club losers is impossible.
She bids 4NT so I bid 5NT showing two Aces with a void. KCB is off the last bid
suit when no room or opponent interference,
so I must have the AK of spades. She now bids 6♣ asking me for the
void so I bid 6♠ saying my void was
in clubs . Now what ? She
bids 7♦ as a choice of
contracts bid . I convert to 7♠
as my hand
was ♠AKQJxx ♥x ♦KQ1098x ♣void .
Here
is a hand from the Spingold. ♠AKQJ109x ♥Qx ♦void ♣KQJ9 which they opened 2♣. Partner has ♠xx
♥AKJxx ♦xx ♣Axxx , bids 2♦. Partner bids 4♠ showing a trick
taking type of 2♣ opener. Partner bids 4NT so gets a 5NT reply. You bid 6♣ , get a 6♦ reply to that
question. You now bid 7♠ so you have 16 top tricks.
RESPONDING TO RKB WITH A
VOID.
When you play EKB the asker is the one with the
void. But what if the responder to RKB (not
EKB) has a void? What is the best way to show
it? Assuming MAJOR suit agreement, this is reasonable:
WHEN HEARTS IS THE AGREED SUIT AND
RESPONDER HAS A VOID:
Asker Responder
4NT 6C,
6D (1)
(1) A jump to a side suit at the six level
shows 1 or 3 keycards with a void in the bid suit.
The asker is supposed to know from the previous bidding how many keycards
responder has.
4NT
6H 1 or
3 keycards with a spade void.
4NT
5NT 0 or 2 keycards with an unknown void.
A follow-up bid of 6C after a 5NT response asks for the
void. Responses are:
4NT
5NT
6C 6D Void in a lower ranking suit
6H Void in a higher ranking suit.
That's the best you can do without committing the hand
to a grand. Hopefully, the asker will have a clue from the
bidding. It is much easier to locate the void after spade
agreement.
WHEN SPADES IS THE AGREED SUIT AND
THE RESPONDER HAS A VOID:
Asker
Responder
4NT
6C, 6D, 6H 1 or 3 plus a void in the bid suit.
4NT
5NT 0
or 2 with an unknown void.
When the response is 5NT, 6C by the RKB bidder asks for
the void. Responses are:
6D, 6H Void
in the bid suit. 6S = Club
void.
THE QUEEN-ASK
After a 1 or 3 keycard void showing response to RKB,
the next ranking suit, if not the agreed suit, is
the queen-ask. (After a 0 or 2 keycard response to RKB of 5NT, the next
ranking suit, 6C asks for the void and is not a
queen-ask)
